Eagle 'Jill-of-all-trades' retires after 44 years

Glenda Stitt

When asked about Glenda Stitt, who has worked in the Butler Eagle’s office since April 16, 1975, one theme immediately emerges among her longtime coworkers: good food.

Stitt, a Franklin Township resident, retired May 31, which means no more savory appetizers, flaky baked goods or professional-level cakes whipped up by the newspaper’s own Martha Stewart.

“She is an excellent cook,” said Sherran Wright, who has worked with Stitt for 28 years and carpooled with her to and from the Eagle for the past 22 years.

She called her friend an exemplary employee at the Eagle who has held many positions over the years.

“She never took all of her vacation,” Wright said. “She is so dedicated.”

She also admires Stitt for her bravery and dignity as Stitt battled breast cancer a few years ago.

“She kept a positive attitude,” Wright said. “She came to work because she thought being here would mean she was productive and moving forward and getting better.”

Nedra Sutch, classified ad manager, has worked with Stitt since 1985.

She said Stitt was always regimented in her work, which has included laying out the newspaper, serving as secretary for Vernon Wise Jr., working in the legal advertising department and serving as receptionist, among other positions.

“She has always been very meticulous, neat and organized with everything she did,” Sutch said.

“Glenda’s career has spanned so many changes in our industry and our company,” said Ron Vodenichar, publisher. “Yet she has handled all the adjustments and the need for new skills with grace and professionalism. She has been a pleasure as an employee and a wonderful friend and coworker. She will be missed and remembered for a long time.”

Keith Graham, the Eagle’s vice president of advertising, praised his longtime coworker.

“Glenda has been an exemplary employee for her entire career,” Graham said. “She has a certain way of doing things and never strays. Her attention to detail and willingness to help others will be greatly missed by all.”

Stitt plans to spend her retirement enjoying the company of her husband, Don, her two children and their spouses and four grandchildren.

The entire Butler Eagle staff gathered Thursday at the office on West Wayne Street for a celebratory retirement dinner sponsored by Eagle management.
