In a May 4th letter to parishioners at churches in Butler and Lawrence counties, Bishop David Zubik announced placing a Pittsburgh Diocese parish chaplain on leave amid allegations of inappropriate contact with adult women.

Fr. James Young, a chaplain with St. Ferdinand's Parish in Cranberry Township, St. Gregory Parish in Zelienople, and Holy Redeemer Parish in Ellwood City, will be on administrative leave pending an investigation.

“Recognizing that this is a painful time for everyone concerned, I ask that you join me in praying for the persons who have brought this allegation forward, for Father Young, for those who will help make a determination in this matter and for me, your bishop,” Bishop Zubik wrote in the letter to parishioners.

The letter releases few details about the allegations but does say Fr. Young cannot “engage in public ministry at your parish or any place else.” The letter further informs parishioners that the chaplain is not allowed to dress or in any way identify himself as a priest or administer any of the church sacraments.

Bishop Zubik also made it a point to tell members of all three churches that placing Fr. Young on leave “does not imply guilt,” and that the diocesan policy mandates that all information regarding the allegations be brought before an Independent Review Board.
