CALLERY — Town council might soon be able to request that residents repair sidewalks in front of their properties, according to an ordinance update to be introduced to the public next month.

If passed, Ed Conway, council president, said the current council would not consider making such a request unless grant money could be provided to fund the repairs.

“We have a good chance at getting some grant money to cover the cost of this,” Conway said. “But unless we would get grant money, this council would not request people to redo the sidewalks at their cost.”

Council will introduce the ordinance for public review at its next meeting at 7 p.m. May 6.

Conway said he understands there might be some concern about the burden this could place on residents if the town did not provide the funding.

The ordinance update comes as council works to bring the town code book up to date, replacing or changing ordinances that are outdated or that are no longer in concurrence with state laws.

“Some of the ordinance hasn't been updated, would you believe, since 1905,” Conway said.

He said now is a good time to make the changes as the borough is in good financial shape.

“We have a nice forecast,” Conway said. “Unless someone would get in and blow that money, Callery should be OK for a decade.”
