Awaiting trial in jail for an alleged aggravated assault against her 9-month-old baby, a 27-year-old Butler woman waived her right to a hearing during her formal arraignment Tuesday.

Butler City Police charged Remedios Xochitl Nopaltecatl-Ramirez after her baby was diagnosed last year with a near-fatal injury that is often referred to as shaken baby syndrome.

Police received a call around 5 p.m. on Aug. 9, 2018, for an unresponsive child in an apartment on Grant Street. There, they found the mother with the baby and a 3-year-old. The baby was flown to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, where the child underwent immediate surgery for the injury, court documents report.

Nopaltecatl-Ramirez told police that the baby fell. But medical personnel, documented by police, said this explanation doesn’t account for the extreme damage done to the baby’s head. The baby, they believe, was exposed to head impact trauma that is consistent with “repetitive acceleration-deceleration forces.”

Nopaltecatl-Ramirez’s private lawyer, Joseph Murphy, couldn’t be reached in time for comment. She is in jail on a $75,000 bail.
