New population estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Thursday suggest that Butler County grew slightly in 2018.

New people moving to the county are the reason for that growth, according to additional data released detailing the specific components of population change.

Between people coming and going, the county enjoyed a net migration of 1,059 people between July 1, 2017, and July 1, 2018.

That’s enough to counter a higher death rate than birth rate among county residents. The bureau estimated 1,956 deaths in Butler County, compared to just 1,788 births.

Butler County went from an estimated 187,004 residents in 2017 to 187,888 in 2018.

The Pittsburgh metropolitan area — which includes several counties neighboring Allegheny County, including Butler County — actually saw a small downtick during the same period. The area’s population went from 2,330,283 in 2017 to 2,324,743 in 2018.

Butler County’s population increase is due to migration, according to the data. The county welcomed 987 migrants from other parts of the country in the year preceding July 1, 2018, and 72 international immigrants.

From April 1, 2010, through July 1, 2018, the county gained 4,239 domestic migrants. Butler County housed 694 new international migrants in the same period.

The 2010 census found a population of 183,862 people in Butler County. Census analysts estimated modest growth in the population count every year since.
