This barn at 455 West Sunbury Road was destroyed by a fire of undetermined origin Monday afternoon.

A Center Township barn that held a piece of Bobby and Karissa Scarmack's lives was reduced to rubble in a Monday afternoon fire.

“We lost three baby ducks that we had in a pen inside,” Karissa Scarmack said. “There was actually a gentleman who was passing by (who) saw the smoke and stopped.”

Scarmack's husband, Bobby, was home at the time and checked on the barn, located at 455 West Sunbury Road, which held the couple's goats, a tractor, tiller and a variety of tools. The goats escaped through open doors.

Describing the blaze, Bobby Scarmack said, “There was nothing I could do. It was almost gone already. It was totally engulfed.”

Mike Pflugh, assistant chief for the Unionville Volunteer Fire Department, said the blaze was reported at 12:14 p.m., adding that the structure was completely engulfed when crews arrived.

“At that point, it was unsalvageable,” Pflugh said. “The owners were standing here. Initially, they thought it was just the exterior and they were going to grab a couple of buckets of water, but then they realized they weren't able to.”

At the scene along with Unionville, the West Sunbury, Prospect and Oneida Valley volunteer fire departments worked to extinguish the hot spots after the fire was under control around 12:50 p.m.

No one was injured, Pflugh said. He noted that the cause of the fire was currently “undetermined.”

Despite their loss, Karissa Scarmack looked to the future.

“We'll rebuild,” she said. “Nobody got hurt, and it wasn't our home.”
