Man on run arrested in Island Friday
A house arrestee on the run for more than a week after removing his electronic monitoring bracelet is behind bars.
Butler police on Friday caught Richard J. Dortman, 58, without incident in the city's Island neighborhood.
District Judge William Fullerton on Monday arraigned Dortman on a felony charge of escape. He is in the Butler County Prison on $25,000 bail.
Authorities had been looking for the defendant since April 3 when his bracelet sent out a tamper alarm. Probation officers later found the bracelet in a parking lot near Virginia Avenue in Butler, said county detectives.
Dortman had been wearing the device since March 22 when he was released from the Butler County Prison as part of a 30-day parole sentence.
An arrest warrant for him was issued April 6.
Butler police Capt. Jim Hollobaugh said a tip led officers to Virginia Avenue near Chestnut Street where they found the alleged escapee about 4 p.m. Friday walking on Virginia Avenue near Chestnut Street.
During his arraignment, Dortman responded to Fullerton with one word answers — “yup” and “nope.” Two county detectives took him to the prison following the court proceedings.
