BUTLER TWP — An Ohio man faces a hearing next week on drug charges stemming from a probation home visit and a subsequent warrant search at a motel.

Markis D. Roland, 38, of Youngstown was arraigned Tuesday on charges of possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. He is being held in the Butler County Prison on $5,000 bail as well as for a probation violation, while awaiting his preliminary hearing April 18 before District Judge Kevin O'Donnell.

The Butler County Drug Task Force filed the case, which followed an April 5 home check by county probation officers and Butler Township police at the Super 8 motel on Route 8 south, authorities said.

The officers, who believed the defendant was staying there, learned that he had rented a room at the motel since March 14, according to charging documents.

When officers got to the room, they noticed in plain view, police said, suspected drug-packaging materials and eight cell phones.

Roland was there with two other people — a man and woman. The man was carrying $740 in currency, authorities said

The officers also found $480 in currency in a pair of pants belonging to Roland. Under the mattress, documents said, was a digital scale that appeared to have cocaine residue on it.

County detective John Johnson, assistant coordinator for the task force, obtained a search warrant for the room. The search turned up three Suboxone strips, authorities said, for which Roland did not have a prescription.
