A 17-year-old Cabot boy was injured late Saturday night when he was shot with a flare gun at a camp fire in Winfield Township, according to state police.

Authorities did not identify the teen, who was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Mercy hospital in Pittsburgh with thermal burns to the neck and hands. His condition was not available Monday morning.

Police said the incident occurred about 11:50 p.m. at a home on Star Grille Road. An 18-year-old Saxonburg man was lying on a hammock and handling the flare gun when it discharged, hitting the boy in the neck. The injured teen was about 15 feet away when the flare gun discharged.

Both teens were around a camp fire at the time of the incident.

Authorities said the boy suffered thermal burns, which are caused by skin exposure to an open flame, intense heat or scalding water. The boy also had a cut to his chin. Police noted the victim was “awake and oriented” while being treated by Saxonburg Ambulance medics.

Police were continuing to investigate the incident Monday morning and did not immediately say if the 18-year-old would be charged.
