BUFFALO TWP — Lock your car doors.

That's the message Buffalo Township police are telling residents in the wake of a recent string of vehicle break-ins.

Loose change and currency have mainly been stolen during the thefts. But in one case, a handgun was taken.

“We've had over a dozen (vehicle) break-ins in the past two to three weeks,” police Chief Tim Derringer said Wednesday.

Police believe more than one person is involved. They have no suspects.

“They're looking for unlocked vehicles,” Derringer said. “If they find one locked, they move on — bang, bang, bang — driveway to driveway.”

Housing developments appear to be the targeted areas because there are a higher concentration of vehicles.

The thieves are trying to take whatever they can in a hurry, police said, such as coins or wallets. The stolen gun was apparently the single most valuable item reportedly taken.

“They're happening in the early morning,” Derringer said of the break-ins, “between 3 and 5 a.m.”

There have been no eyewitnesses to help police identify any suspects. Surveillance video reviewed during the investigation has not been much help either.

A suspicious vehicle was caught by one security camera, but the image was not clear and police could not get a make or model on it.

“Our advice to residents is, 'Lock your doors and take your personal belongings inside,'” Derringer said. “And if you see or hear anything suspicious, call 911.”
