Police say kidnapping and arson suspect John O'Leary took his own life after a multi-vehicle chase Friday in Pittsburgh.

WORTH TWP — The two-day manhunt for a suspect accused of kidnapping and arson ended with his committing suicide following a car crash in Pittsburgh.

According to state police, suspect John Thomas O'Leary, 52, of Munhall in Allegheny County, was involved in a multi-vehicle chase in Pittsburgh late Friday afternoon. Police said O'Leary crashed his 2018 Hyundai Elantra in Pittsburgh's Greenfield neighborhood and then took his own life as officers approached the car.

Authorities reported O'Leary was believed to be armed and dangerous during the manhunt.

O'Leary allegedly kidnapped an ex-girlfriend at gunpoint Thursday at the Slippery Rock Campground in Worth Township. The woman later escaped uninjured by jumping from his car while it was stopped.

Pittsburgh media outlets reported Friday evening that state police also suspected O'Leary of setting the same victim's Westmoreland County home on fire. Firefighters in Irwin confirmed Friday evening that crews responded to a fire at the victim's home earlier in the day.

Police noted the 57-year-old victim already had a protection-from-abuse order against O'Leary that was issued in Westmoreland County.

Police obtained a felony arrest warrant Thursday night for O'Leary in connection with the incident earlier that day that began as a home invasion call at the campground on West Park Road.

The woman told authorities that O'Leary, a former boyfriend, arrived at a camp trailer where she was visiting around 11 a.m. and entered the home uninvited.

Police Cpl. Tim Morando said the woman and her brother apparently own the trailer at the campsite.

She accused the defendant of grabbing her by the shoulder and shoving her onto a bedroom mattress.

He allegedly held a handgun to the side of her head and told her he was going to kill her, police said.

The woman recounted that she tried to calm and console O'Leary. She said he eventually ordered her to get up and go for a walk with him.

The two walked through the campground for some time. O'Leary later said he had to use the bathroom, police said, so he and the victim drove in his car to the facility's common restroom area.

The woman eventually managed to alert her nearby brother about her dilemma, and he notified security, who called 911.

Police allege O'Leary also threatened the life of the woman's brother during the incident.

O'Leary started driving his car with the woman in it, but eventually stopped. The break allowed her the opportunity to get out of the car and run off around 3:30 p.m.

O'Leary would have faced felony charges of kidnapping, aggravated assault, felons not to possess firearms and trespass, in addition to multiple misdemeanors.
