In two separate incidents on back-to-back days, two South Butler County School District students face administrative discipline for weapon violations.

In one, a high school girl, will be disciplined for having a “small Swiss Army knife” in her purse on Tuesday, according to a letter from Superintendent David Foley sent to parents and media Wednesday. Administrators found the knife after another student turned in the student for vaping in class. The vape was also seized, and police were called to the school to handle the knife.

In the other incident, two live ammunition rounds were found in a locker room at Knoch Middle School. Administrators investigated and found the boy who left them there. He had more rounds in his pocket. No gun was on school grounds, according to the letter.

“While school police and administration don't believe either of these students intentionally brought the Swiss Army knife or ammunition to school or posed any threat, both students will face serious discipline,” Foley wrote in the letter.

District policies prohibit weapons on campus, according to the district policy manual. Violations are punishable by one year's expulsion, although specific punishments are flexible as the superintendent sees fit.

Discipline and further action will be handled and decided in hearings with the students, according to Jenny Webb, the district's communications manager.

Both Webb and Foley urge parents to tell their children not to bring items to class that violate school policies.

“We just really want to urge people to talk to their kids and reemphasize the seriousness of all of this,” Webb said.
