SEVEN FIELDS — With renovations at the borough's community center winding down, council members are set to consider a measure to increase and simplify access to the building.

During a council meeting Monday, members heard from a representative from North Hills Locks & Safe about a remote access door for the community center. The door could be accessed from anywhere with an Internet connection with codes given out to borough officials. The system would keep track of who is using and granting access to the building.

Currently, those renting the building must pick up a key during business hours at the borough building, and return that key after the event is finished. Borough Manager Tom Smith said there have been instances in which officials are called on weekends when a key is misplaced or a party is locked out. He added there have also been issues with the keys themselves.

“There have been issues where keys don't come back or maybe they're duplicated,” he said.

The remote access would allow for officials to address those issues, while also increasing general security for the building, which is undergoing renovations. Smith said about $50,000 of the allotted $100,000 has been spent thus far. He noted the access door would be paid for separately.

As for the renovations, Smith said the project is on schedule for an April 1 opening. He said next month's council meeting, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. April 8, will be held at the community center.
