A 35-year-old man, who was trapped in his car after it veered off Mars Evans City Road, was flown by medical helicopter Sunday night to a Pittsburgh hospital for treatment.

ADAMS TWP — A Callery man is in critical condition after a Sunday night crash left him trapped in his vehicle off Mars Evans City Road. Emergency responders rescued 35-year-old Matthew J. Wyzykowski, extricating him from the wreck and flying him to UPMC Presbyterian for treatment.

According to Adams Township police, Wyzykowski was traveling north around 9:15 p.m. in the 1300 block of Mars Evans City Road when he appeared to lose control.

The car hit a guard rail and spun off the road, according to police. The vehicle then went airborne and struck a large tree on the driver's side with such force that the car ended up facing south, police said.

“We had heavy entrapment,” said Assistant Chief Sean Sokolowski of the Adams Area Fire District.

The vehicle sustained extreme front-end damage after hitting the tree. Sokolowski said the impact pushed the driver's door and the driver into the console.

Sokolowski said firefighters had to use a significant amount of equipment to remove the driver, who was conscious as they worked.

Adams Township police are still investigating the crash, and no charges had been filed as of 3 p.m. Monday. Adams Township Assistant Police Chief Robert Scanlon said speed and alcohol are suspected to be contributing factors to the crash.

Callery, Cranberry and Evans City fire departments also assisted.
