Police asking for help finding mailbox vandals

BUTLER TWP — Police are seeking an unknown shovel-wielding vandal who damaged several mailboxes early Sunday morning on the township's south side.

Two mailboxes each on Holland Drive in Dutchtown Village and on nearby Decatur Drive were targeted — apparently at random, said Butler Township police Lt. Matthew Pearson.

Police are reportedly reviewing surveillance video for clues. The available footage shows an unidentified four-door sedan pull up to the mailboxes shortly before 4 a.m.

The driver stops and someone gets out of the rear passenger seat of the car and smashes the mailboxes with a shovel.

Police said they recovered from Holland Drive a spade shovel with a long yellow handle that they believe was used in the vandalism spree.

One of the victims reported hearing “loud banging” outside and seeing a car in the distance driving away.

In taking the reports from the victims, officers did not see any other vandalism.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 724-285-9600, or call 911.
