File this one under “No good deed goes unpunished.”

Butler police obtained an arrest warrant Tuesday for a man accused of stealing nearly $1,400 from a couple who provided him with a place to stay.

Devin B. Thompson, 22, who has no known address, is charged with a first-degree misdemeanor count of theft.

A couple told police that Thompson showed up Feb. 20 at the door of their home on the 200 block of West Penn Street looking for a place to spend the night.

“Thompson stated that he had no place to go,” according to court documents. “He stated that he needed a place to stay before getting a bus to Florida.”

The couple allowed him to sleep in their living room. But when they awoke the next morning, he was gone.

On the living room floor, however, were the contents from the purse belonging to one of the occupants. Missing from a wallet in the purse, police said, was $1,290.

The occupants told investigators that no one else was in the apartment that night.

On Feb. 21, police in Allegheny County arrested Thompson on unrelated charges at his mother's house in Shaler Township. Police noted they found a “large sum of money” at the home.

Butler officers subsequently interviewed the defendant at the Allegheny County Jail.

“He admitted to taking the cash and leaving,” investigators said.

He also allegedly told them that most of the stolen money was at his mother's house. Police said they recovered $1,130 of the stolen money.
