Longtime staffer enters race for prothonotary job
Another candidate has entered the race for county prothonotary.
Paula Painter of Clearfield Township entered the race last week, bringing more than 18 years of experience in the prothonotary's office.
The prothonotary's office is where all documents that are filed in civil court matters are filed and held. These files include automobile accident cases, property disputes and mortgage foreclosures, among others.
The list of prothonotary responsibilities is large, but there is a solution for every question and a file to be found for every query, according to Painter.
“I have a drawer containing three notebooks and three binders full of notes and examples of unusual situations,” she said. “Because it is my job to assist every single person (who) walks into our office properly, and to make sure — whether they are an attorney or just a regular lay person — that the documents received by our office follow the rules of the state and the local judicial systems.”
Painter said there are some big changes, including online filing systems and credit card payments, on the horizon that require someone adept at the inner workings of the office.
She said she has the experience and skills to research and properly adapt Butler County's office to any changes the state makes while maintaining the integrity of the office's main role.
“The key thing for us is filing those documents correctly,” Painter said.
Painter said she felt even more confident about her abilities with the endorsement of the retiring Glenna Walters, who has served as prothonotary for the past 36 years. She said Walters told her that she was ready to lead the office.
“As first deputy, when the prothonotary is out of the office for any reason, I am the acting prothonotary. This responsibility is not something I take lightly — rather, I do my very best,” Painter said.
Painter said her experience would make her a good fit for the job.
“There will not be a 10-year learning curve. On the contrary, I will be able to be sworn in as your prothonotary and continue the high standards that have been instilled within me from day one,” Painter said.
