Both U.S. Representatives with territory in Butler County voted against a House bill blocking President Donald Trump’s national emergency declaration.

The House’s 245-182 vote fell below the two-thirds majority that would be needed to override Trump’s promise to veto the bill, if it also passes in the Senate, which has 18 days to act on the bill.

Trump saw support from Glenn Thompson, R-15th, and Mike Kelly, R-16th, who voted against the bill.

In a statement after the vote, Kelly said he stands behind Trump’s declaration.

“President Trump declared a national emergency on our southern border to fix a problem that has existed for decades and has consistently dodged a legislative solution,” Kelly said.

Kelly said the wall will combat illegal immigrants, drugs and crime.

“Now, through this resolution of disapproval, Democrats are attempting to state that no such emergency exists,” Kelly said. “They also cast the president as lawless, stating that his legal authority to declare the emergency does not exist. They are wrong on both counts, and if they want to end this emergency, they should come back to the table, drop the ‘resistance,’ and adequately fund border security.”

In a statement, Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she placed the declaration in the context of the U.S. Constitution. She said the vote is a matter of checks and balances.

“But we, in this House of Representatives, each one of us, and everyone in public service in our country, takes an oath of office to support and defend the Constitution of the United States,” Pelosi said. “Well, we are not going to give any president, Democratic or Republican, a blank check to shred the Constitution of the United States.”
