Patriots likely to prevail

Super Bowl 53 seems to be the game nobody wanted to see.

Going into the AFC and NFC championship games two weeks ago, football fans envisioned a Rams-Chiefs rematch and a repeat of their 54-51 shootout on Monday Night Football.

Fans could have lived with a Saints-Patriots game, pitting two quarterbacks north of age 40 against each other in Drew Brees and Tom Brady.

Instead, we get the Rams and the Patriots ... doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of juice in this matchup.

Or is there?

This game does pit the most successful coach in NFL history, Bill Belichick, against the youngest coach in the league right now in Sean McVay.

It pits the league dynasty against the league upstart. The Patriots are in their third straight Super Bowl and the young Rams are in position to stick around for a while.

Their critics call the Patriots cheaters and the general football faithful is just tired of seeing them in the big game. This is Brady’s ninth Super Bowl, after all.

That’s downright crazy.

And if the Pats win, they will tie the Steelers’ record of six Super Bowl victories. Not many folks around these parts want to see that happen.

New England’s 36 all-time postseason wins has already snapped the Steelers’ previous record of 35.

Enough’s enough already, right?

The Rams are going to pop Brady and Belichick’s balloon this weekend just like the Eagles did last year, right?

Wrong.

The Rams’ biggest hope of winning this game is getting in Brady’s face, getting sacks and forcing errant throws. But that is unlikely to happen.

Brady has thrown 90 passes in his two playoff games this season and has yet to be sacked. The vaunted Rams’ defensive front has recorded three sacks in its two playoff games.

The Patriots own six quarterback sacks so far this postseason.

Neither team is likely to run the ball with much success against the other. L.A.’s defensive front does stuff the run and Todd Gurley just isn’t healthy enough to slash through New England.

And all due respect to C.J. Anderson, but he waas cut by Oakland earlier this season.

This game will come down to the quarterbacks. Jared Goff is an up-and-comer who is already pretty good. But the feeling here is the L.A. Rams are in “happy to be here” mode.

Brady wants to add to his legacy. No one has figured out how to cover James White out of the backfield and Julian Edelman has re-established himself as Brady’s go-to guy. White and Edelman have a combined 35 catches for 393 yards in the playoffs this year.

Good luck with that. L.A.

Patriots, 31-20, with Brady as MVP.
