Nothing to be festive about for Pirate fans

PirateFest is going on this weekend.

Just what is the Pirate brass going to tell what loyal fan base it has left?

All the Bucs have done so far this off-season are watch Jordy Mercer sign with Detroit and ship starting pitcher Ivan Nova off in a trade for a prospect.

The Pirates are bringing back Jung Ho Kang for a year at $3 million. They also signed free agent outfielder Lonnie Chisenhall, an oft-injured player from Cleveland who hits when he’s healthy — whenever that is.

They also signed free agent pitcher Jordan Lyles, a sometimes-starter in recent years who will be given the opportunity to nail down the fifth spot in the Pirates’ starting rotation.

The first four spots — occupied by Jameson Taillon, Trevor Williams, Chris Archer and Joe Musgrove — do look solid if they stay healthy. The bullpen looks pretty good, too.

The starting lineup? Not so much, especially if the team deals Starling Marte to the Dodgers, as such rumor is flying.

Corey Dickerson had a solid 2018 in left. No one is sure when Gregory Polanco will return in right. The prospect of Chisenhall starting out there excites no one.

Slugging outfielders Adam Jones and Marwin Gonzalez are on the free agent market. Either would look great in a Pirate uniform. Both would be expensive, but the Bucs have money to spend, should they choose to spend it. That’s a whole ‘nother story.

Josh Bell is an anchor at first base, but the middle defense at second base and shortstop looks shaky. Erik Gonzalez, a utility player in Cleveland, may be the starting shortstop.

The Tigers signed Mercer for two years, $5 million. The Pirates couldn’t have done that?

Josh Harrison is still a free agent. It wouldn’t hurt to bring him back and free up Adam Frazier for outfield depth.

Looking at the National League Central, the Brewers signed free agent Yasmani Grandal for one year at $18 million. The Cardinals added slugging first baseman Paul Goldschmidt aznd all-star left-handed reliever Andrew Miller.

The Cubs are the Cubs. The Reds — who could always hit the ball— added outfielders Matt Kemp and Yasiel Puig.

Those same Reds — who have struggled to pitch the ball — have dealt for starting hurlers Sonny Gray, Tanner Roark and Alex Wood. That organization has created plenty of preseason excitement.

The Pirates? Not so much.

Granted, the off-season isn’t over yet and the Pirates could still make some moves to improve the team.

But if they enter the season with the roster as it stands, it will rely on low-scoring games to win — and that would have to happen with a leaky infield defense.

The Bucs want to talk baseball at Piratefest.

Give us something to talk about.
