Ice fishing begins at Lake Arthur
FRANKLIN TWP — Park rangers at Moraine State Park spotted the first ice fishermen of the season over the past week.
On Thursday, fishermen found between four and six inches of ice on the top of Lake Arthur. Bryan Moore, the park's ranger supervisor, said the park has a policy of never declaring when exactly the ice is thick enough to walk onto and start fishing, for liability's sake. But Moore confirmed that the fishermen he has spoken to are enjoying conditions.
“With these ice fishermen,” Moore said, “When there's ice on the lake, they want to go fish.”
Two of the fishermen, Bill McKeown, 38, and Ryan Hills, 38, walked onto Lake Arthur at 7 a.m. Thursday. Both men had the day off work, and they intended on spending it enjoying the outdoors and catching their dinner.
