Icy roads blamed for multiple wrecks Freezing rain hits Butler County

Icy roads Monday morning at times made for white knuckle moments for Butler County motorists.

State and local police reported a number of accidents, apparently all minor, on county roads.

A boy suffered a minor injury around 9 a.m. when the school bus he was riding slid into a guardrail in Jefferson Township.

The bus was headed to St. Luke Lutheran School in Saxonburg when the accident happened at Bonniebrook Road and Route 356 near Penn United, state police said.

There were about 10 students on the bus. No other injuries were reported.

The boy had a “bump” on the head, a trooper said. An ambulance crew examined him. Police said his mother later arrived and took him home.

The bus later was back on the road headed to the school. Police blamed slick road conditions for the accident.

In another accident around 8:30 a.m., emergency crews had to rescue a driver trapped in his overturned vehicle on Route 356 in Jefferson Township. No injuries were reported.

About 15 minutes before that rollover wreck, a car spun out while traveling west on Route 422 and hit the Jersey barrier in Butler Township, authorities said. The accident happened between Route 8 and the Lyndora exit.

No one was injured. The car had to be towed.

Shortly after 8 a.m., a vehicle skidded out of control and took out a park and ride sign on Route 8 at Renfrew Road in Penn Township. No one was hurt.

Authorities said there were no injuries at 9:40 a.m. when a vehicle crashed into a hillside on the 300 block of Dinnerbell Road in Penn Township.

Around 10:05 a.m., a vehicle flipped over on Brownsdale Road in Penn Township. All of the occupants were able to get out and were not injured, emergency crews said. The vehicle had to be towed.

Just 15 minutes after that accident, two vehicles collided on Mercer Road in Butler Township. Minor injuries were reported, but no other information was immediately available.

An unidentified motorist was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital following a one-vehicle rollover crash a little before noon on the 600 block of Chicora Fenelton Road in Donegal Township, according to 911 officials.

The accidents occurred after the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh issued a hazardous weather outlook advisory for northwest Pennsylvania, including Butler County, which warned that light freezing rain could cause problems for drivers.
