CLAY TWP — An alleged drunken driver is accused of causing nearly $1,300 in damage after he allegedly used his pickup truck to do “doughnuts” in a corn field.

Chester E. Gladd Jr., 25, of Boyers was more than twice the state's legal limit for alcohol and on drugs Oct. 24, state police said, when they found him in a Dodge Ram at the bottom of the corn field on the 900 block of Mahood Road.

Gladd faces a hearing next month on a list of criminal and traffic charges that investigators recently filed in connection with the incident.

Troopers said they were called about 11 p.m. for a report of a truck vandalizing crops and found “a single entry point” into the field.

They spotted the pickup as well as damage throughout the field caused by someone doing “doughnuts,” or driving in circles at a high speed, according to court documents.

Damage to the field and three-quarters of an acre of corn would later be pegged at $1,277.50.

Police found Gladd in the truck and they believed he was impaired by alcohol. They also smelled marijuana, documents said. A search of the pickup turned up about four grams of suspected marijuana in the center console.

“The defendant advised he was operating the (truck) and drove it into the corn field after consuming alcoholic beverages and marijuana,” a police affidavit said.

Troopers took him to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test that showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.170 percent. In Pennsylvania, a level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated.

Toxicology results also showed he had marijuana and LSD in his system, documents said.

Gladd is charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, DUI, driving under the influence of a combination of drugs and alcohol, possession of a small amount of marijuana, agricultural vandalism and criminal mischief, all misdemeanors.

He also was cited for failing to keep right and disregarding traffic lanes.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 12 at the office of District Judge Lewis Stoughton in Chicora.
