MARS — The borough's 2019 budget contains no tax or water rate increases, officials said.

The $1.142 million budget is an increase over the current year's $1.025 million. According to documents, revenues include $339,236 from taxes, which is a result of the first property tax increase in 20 years for 2018.

That rate will stay the same, according to Mayor Gregg Hartung. The total millage rate rose to 19.88 in 2018, up from 16.88 previously.

“That tax increase helped us do some things in 2018 and 2019,” Hartung said.

Other revenues include $472,082 from charges for services, $149,105 from intergovernmental revenues, $43,530 in interest and royalties and $32,500 from license and permits.

The borough will see $292,775 in general government expenses, and will spend $285,243 for public safety. Public works costs include $288,597 for streets and $185,177 for other services, such as water. Hartung said the water rate also will remain the same.

Recreation accounts for $35,650 in the budget, while community development is listed as $55,000. The budget was approved during a meeting earlier this month.

Council is scheduled to vote on keeping the tax rates the same at its next meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. Jan. 7.
