The sign at the entrance to Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School was found vandalized after Cardinal Donald Wuerl was accused of covering up abuse by priests. The diocese removed the name from the school following protests.

In August, the release of a massive grand jury report on accusations of sexual abuse, rape and general misconduct by Catholic priests in Pennsylvania turned heads nationwide and rocked congregations in Butler County.

That initial report named 18 priests with some tie to Butler County. Some worked here, others studied in the area and still more were accused of abuse that happened here.

Many readers of the report pointed to Cardinal Donald Wuerl in its aftermath, blaming him for a lack of repercussions for some in the report. A school in Cranberry dropped his name, becoming simply North Catholic High School.

The aftermath of the report is still being felt at the year's end. Just recently, the Illinois attorney general reported that more than 500 priests have been accused of sexual abuse and haven't been punished. In November, the Pittsburgh diocese came forward with a 19th priest with Butler ties.
