Weather forecasters aren't dreaming of a white Christmas this year.

Although there is a slight chance of snow flurries in Butler County this weekend, one week out from the holiday Pittsburgh's National Weather Service office predicted only cloudy skies and soggy ground on Christmas Day. Michael Brown, a NWS meteorologist, said the chances are “marginal at best” of there being snow on the ground anywhere in the county next Tuesday.

“Higher elevations have a slightly higher chance,” Brown said. “They might get a dusting, and it might not all melt by Tuesday.”

But for Butler as a whole — and the region at large — Brown sounded confident that a postcard-worthy holiday won't be coming this year.

“You're not going to get a whole lot,” he said.

A little snow should make an appearance throughout the weekend. More so than snow, however, NWS models predict rain and clouds this weekend.

The moisture coming in is lifted off the Great Lakes. If that moisture turns into snow Monday and is met with cold temperatures, Brown said there may be a little snow leftover on Christmas.

“But there's just not a lot of moisture to work with,” he said.

Brown said Butler is looking at temperatures in the high 30s and low 40s around the holiday.

Snow or no snow, county road crews will be ready, according to Mike Mattis, Butler County's Pennsylvania Department of Transportation maintenance manager. A light snow, rain or other winter weather event still affects the holidays of about 100 people at Butler's PennDOT, he said.

They've been monitoring the weather, Mattis said, and they're happy the weather doesn't look too nasty for the holiday.

“If we don't have snow, it can be a good thing for the guys and gals,” Mattis said. “They can get more time with their families.”

Still, he said, “any kind of winter weather, however light,” means they'll be out working to make sure roads are safe for holiday travel.

And if you ask a snowplow worker, they'll believe there won't be snow on Christmas when they see it.

“I've seen forecasts change overnight,” Mattis said.
