ADAMS TWP — Police have filed charges against a township man after a wrong turn and a traffic stop led to the discovery of underage drinking and drug use at a pre-Halloween party.

Police on DUI patrol at 11:37 p.m. Oct. 27 stopped a vehicle on Route 28 after watching the driver make an illegal turn, documents state.

Police pulled over the vehicle into a driveway in front of a township residence. As officers approached to talk to the driver, they saw something suspicious through the window of the house.

Around 30 juveniles were running down the steps to the basement, with several fleeing outside the house and into a white vehicle parked outside, documents state.

Officers lept into action, giving the initial offender a warning and reportedly stopping the white vehicle before it could leave the premises.

Inside the vehicle, officers reportedly encountered a strong odor of alcohol and a group of underage individuals.

Returning to the house, an officer knocked on the door and saw three people flee to the basement, declining to let them in, documents state.

Police reportedly observed “numerous persons” fleeing the house into a cornfield as additional officers arrived on the scene to set up a perimeter. Among those alleged partiers who officers managed to stop was Nathan Paras, 18, of Adams Township, documents state.

Paras reportedly told officers that he lived at the house with his father, who was out of town.

Officers found several others fleeing the house, many of whom were minors — and at least one of whom was visibly intoxicated, documents state.

Two of those found reportedly told officers that numerous people were drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana, and officers also reported smelling marijuana coming from the residence's open garage door. Police asked Paras for consent to search the home, but he said “no,” documents state. Officers also reportedly called Daniel Paras, who is renting the home, but he also refused to give officers consent to search the home.

Officers eventually received a warrant to search the home, finding several other juveniles, along with marijuana, drug paraphernalia and alcoholic beverages, documents state.

Nathan Paras is charged with corruption of minors, furnishing liquor to minors, purchase of an alcoholic beverage by a minor, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Charges were filed Dec. 14.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 15.
