Butler police say they had to use a Taser on a man who resisted officers Thursday investigating the alleged assault of his mother the night before at their home on East Christie Avenue.

William E. Shaner, 31, was arrested and later placed in the Butler County Prison on $100,000 bail.

The defendant's mother Thursday showed up at the police station to report that her son grabbed her by the throat and threw her to the floor about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to court documents.

She recounted that he punched and kicked her in the legs several times and twisted her left arm, causing her extreme pain.

Police said the injuries they saw were consistent with her account of what happened.

The woman told officers that Shaner also gave her a warning: If she turned him in, he would shoot police, according to a police report.

Officers later Thursday went to the defendant's home.

“Shaner refused to show officers his hands,” a police affidavit said, “and actively resisted with officers.”

At the that point, documents said, police used the Taser “to assist officers in gaining compliance.”

Shaner was arraigned on misdemeanor charges of simple assault and resisting arrest. His preliminary hearing is set for Dec. 31.
