PERRY TWP, Lawrence County — Two Butler County residents were injured early Friday morning in a suspected drunken driving crash on Route 488 near the Lawrence-Butler County line, authorities said.

Tonya Durand, 32, of Prospect, the driver, was hurt and had to be rescued from the wreckage shortly after midnight. She was later flown to a Pittsburgh hospital.

State police said her passenger, Ryan M. Waller, 36, of Center Township, allegedly fled the crash before troopers or emergency crews arrived, despite being injured. He was wanted on a bench warrant, a police report noted.

Waller was eventually caught, treated at a hospital and taken to the Lawrence County Jail.

Police said Durand was speeding on Route 488 in a GMC Envoy about 12:20 a.m. when she traveled off the road about four miles west of the Butler County line.

The vehicle struck and sheared off a utility pole, leaving her trapped inside the overturned vehicle on its driver's side.

“She was partially ejected through the sunroof,” said Mark McDevitt, chief of the Wurtemburg-Perry Volunteer Fire Department.

The wires from the utility pole were under the vehicle. Firefighters called the utility company and a crew subsequently determined the lines were “dead.”

The woman, who was conscious, was removed through the sunroof and appeared to have injuries to her left leg and hip, according to the report.

She was taken by Portersville EMS to UPMC Passavant in Cranberry Township before a medical helicopter flew her to UPMC Presbyterian. Her condition was not immediately available.

Police said driving under the influence charges are pending toxicology results from a blood test.

McDevitt noted that the road was icy.

Waller was able to get out of the vehicle on his own and took off, police said.

But at some point, according to the report, he “flagged down a passing motorist due to his injuries from the crash and the cold weather.”

Troopers were notified and they soon found Waller where he had sought help. An ambulance took him to Ellwood City Hospital, where he was treated for unspecified injuries.

Upon being released, he was taken by police to the county jail for the warrant.

Butler County court records showed the warrant was issued Aug. 6 after he failed to appear for a hearing on a probation violation stemming from a 2017 conviction for making a false statement when he tried to buy a gun in Summit Township.
