No injuries in chimney fire at Franklin Twp. home

FRANKLIN TWP — A chimney fire at a home on New Castle Road Thursday afternoon caused extensive damage to the roof but no injuries, according to the Prospect fire chief.

Chief Ken Wilson said the design of the chimney caused problems. Instead of shooting straight up and out of the home, the chimney had several angles in it, causing smoke and heat to bottleneck, he said

The chimney was also surrounded by plywood, a flammable material that ignited.

The homeowner noticed something was wrong and emergency responders were able to quell the flames in time.

“Very lucky,” Wilson said. “It could have been much worse and it could've gone south very quickly.”

Responders had to tear down the chimney, causing significant damage to the roof in the process, Wilson said.

He estimated damage between $10,000 and $15,000.
