Barnett Selling
Barnett Selling, a resident of Cranberry Township, passed away Saturday after a three-year-long battle with cancer.
Barnett was born Nov. 16, 1956, in Erie. He grew up in Erie and graduated from Academy High School in 1974.
Barnett graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1977, with a Bachelor of Arts in geography. He then graduated from Gannon College in 1979, with a Master of Arts in social sciences. It was during his time at the University of Pittsburgh that he met his future wife, Cynthia, who studied metallurgical engineering; he always said she was the brains of the family!
After completing his master's degree, Barnett served in the U.S. Army in the 197th Infantry Brigade, stationed in Fort Benning, Ga., achieving the rank of first lieutenant.
After serving in the Army, where he had enlisted in the reserves for the remainder of his life, he moved back to Pittsburgh and married Cynthia on April 3, 1982. They had three sons, Benjamin, born in 1991, Joshua, born in 1993, and Jonathan, born in 1995. Benjamin passed away shortly after birth due to medical complications. Joshua and Jonathan both still reside in Pittsburgh.
Barnett never missed a single band concert, soccer game or family event. Barnett was so proud of both Joshua and Jonathan and always described them as his greatest achievement.
Barnett was a loving, devoted and ever-present father, entrepreneur and collector. He held a variety of business ventures, including operating a Sunoco gas station, three car washes and a rigging company.
He enjoyed collecting stamps, coins and baseball cards, photography, and watching movies with his family, especially John Wayne movies.
He was a spiritual man, who grew up attending a conservative synagogue in Erie.
He will be deeply missed by his friends and family, especially for his incessant talking and ability to hold a conversation with anyone.
He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Mrozek; his two sons, Joshua and Jonathan (Erika); his brothers, Allen (Enid Marcus), Sherwood (Laura); and a sister, Judy.
Barnett was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Jacobeth; his son, Benjamin; a brother, Ronald; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn.
