Leslie E. Callander

Leslie E. Callander

Leslie E. Callander, 77, of the village of West Freedom, Parker, went home to be with the Lord on Friday evening surrounded by his loving family.

Born in West Monterey, Pa., on Sept. 19, 1941, he was the son of the late Donal C. and Viola Thompson Callander.

Les attended the West Freedom United Methodist Church and was a 1959 graduate of Allegheny-Clarion Valley High School.

He was a member of the Boy Scouts in his youth including being a junior assistant scoutmaster, an avid horseman, and skilled hunter.

Les first worked as a newspaper carrier for the former Pittsburgh Press, then Asplundh Tree Service, former Cooper-Bessemer Energy, and finally was employed by Penreco in Karns City from which he retired with 37 years of service. At Penreco his final position was hydro plant operator, retiring at age 62.

He loved working in the outdoors and hunting with his father and sons, and also working in his workshop. With woodworking, he shared his talent by creating furniture, a playhouse for grandchildren, and adding well-built additions to his home.

He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, the former Barbara Elliott, whom he married May 28, 1966; a daughter, Laurie; and four sons, Wesley (Kim), Elliott “Pete,” and Vincent (Amy) Callander, all of Parker, and John (significant other Mary Johnston) of Rimersburg; five grandchildren, Justin (Holly) Stants of Clintonville, and Amanda (Sam) Dittman, Dalton, Jaelynn and Anna Callander, all of Parker; and four great-grandchildren, Colt and Kaya Dittman and Liam and Lexan Stants.

Les is survived by a sister, Elaine Callander Simpson of West Freedom, two aunts, Bessie Maihle and Kathy Jo (Ralph) Morrison, as well as nieces and nephews, cousins, great-nieces and nephews, and brothers-in-law.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Paula Eileen Callander.
