Reinke falls right in line

With the high school football season ending this weekend, the Butler Eagle Scoring Trophy winner will be decided.

Mars running back Garrett Reinke entered Friday night’s action with the inside track on winning the trophy for the first time.

Reinke began the night with 1,518 yards rushing — he is the county’s rushing leader as well — and 19 touchdowns. He has scored 120 points.

Freeport quarterback Austin Romanchak is the only player with a realistic shot at catching Reinke. He entered Friday night’s game at Knoch with 98 points, leaving him 22 behind.

Should Romanchak come up with at least four touchdowns for the Yellowjackets in the regular season finale — and Reinke is contained by Hampton — he would become only the second quarterback to win the Eagle Scoring Trophy. The other was Slippery Rock’s Jono Powell in 2008.

If Romanchak winds up a few points behind Reinke, Freeport being unable to land a Week Zero opponent may have cost him. The irony there is Freeport and Knoch were planning to face each other in Week Zero, but the WPIAL scheduled the two to face each other in a cross-over game this weekend.

Knoch found another Week Zero opponent. Freeport did not.

Reinke winning the trophy wouldn’t exactly be big news in Mars. Four other Planet running backs have claimed the award since 2005.

Paul Ferrese won it in 2005, Bill Bair in 2006 and 2007, Josh Schultheis in 2013, Isaiah Johnson in 2015. Johnson then shared the honor with Karns City’s Kaiden Powers in 2016.

Mars is known for producing standout running backs. The team’s offensive system almost guarantees it.

Brad Mueller and Austin Miele were other standout Mars backs who did not win the scoring trophy.

Reinke is a hard-nosed back who runs close to the ground with deceptive speed. He can break tackles and run away from tacklers.

In other words, he’s a typical Mars ball carrier — who will likely carry the trophy back to his school.
