Michael Paul “Red” LaVan

Michael Paul “Red” LaVan, 43, a resident of Franklin, Jackson Township, was sadly pronounced dead at 8:36 p.m. Friday of injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash along Patchel Run Road in Franklin, Sugarcreek Borough.

He was born on Dec. 18, 1974, in Oil City, a beloved son of the late William H. and Betty J. (Burk) LaVan.

Known to many as a handy man, there were very few projects Red couldn't tackle and fix.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoyed shooting pool with his buddies and helping others.

A gentle giant of a man, Red would give you the shirt off his back. He will be fondly remembered by so many for his generous spirit and his booming, well-known phrase to so many who just needed a pick-me-up, “Hey, just come give this fat guy a hug.”

He was of the United Methodist faith.

Red is survived by his girlfriend of more than eight years, Jill Angiolieri and her children; his brothers and sisters, James R. LaVan and his fiancée, Tara Snyder, of Butler, Ruth A. Vanistendael and her husband, Varick, of Slippery Rock, and Jenifer L. Kellar and her fiancé, Adam Norr, of Franklin.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
