Sister vs. Sister

First Baptist Christian graduates, sisters and Butler residents Lydia, left, and Hannah Roth will face each other in a Presidents' Athletic Conference college soccer game Wednesday night at Geneva. Lydia is a junior defender for Geneva while Hannah is a senior forward for Waynesburg.

Hannah and Lydia Roth have been sisters forever. They've been teammates almost that long.

Wednesday night at Reeves Field on the campus of Geneva College, they will be opponents for the first time.

The Butler residents and First Baptist Christian graduates were soccer and basketball teammates throughout high school.

Hannah, a senior at Waynesburg University, plays outside wing as a forward for the Yellow Jackets' women's soccer team. Lydia is a junior defender for Geneva.

The two Presidents' Athletic Conference teams clash on Wednesday in a game critical to both teams' playoff hopes.

“I'm excited about it, but a little nervous at the same time,” Hannah said. “The position I play, the position she plays ... We're going to wind up in the same area on the field.

“This will be the first time I've ever played against a sibling in sports. It will be fun. The rest of the family is still trying to sort out how they're going to root in this game.”

Hannah Roth went to Waynesburg straight out of high school. She is majoring in nursing and has been playing on the soccer team for two years. She played basketball there her first two years.

Lydia Roth played basketball at Butler County Community College the past two years before transferring to Geneva. She is majoring in middle school science.

She will play basketball for the Golden Tornadoes once soccer season is over.

“I really wanted to play both sports in college,” Lydia said. “The basketball and soccer coaches at Geneva are good friends and they made it easy for me to do that.

“As for playing against Hannah's team ... We've been talking about this game since our schedules came out. It will be interesting.”

Geneva is 9-7 overall, 4-2 in the PAC. Waynesburg is 7-5-2 overall, 3-3 in conference play.

“There's a chance both of us will make the playoffs, but chances are, whoever wins our game will be the team that goes,” Hannah said.

Hannah and Lydia Roth both went two years without playing soccer before returning to the game. Hannah went through that process first.

“She's been very helpful to me in that regard,” Lydia said. “We practiced and scrimmaged against each other all summer. She told me what to expect, what to concentrate on and how to get back into it.

“We know each other's moves better than anyone.”

Lydia never expected to play soccer again after suffering a bad concussion late in her senior season at First Baptist Christian.

“When I came here (to Geneva), I talked to the coach and decided to give it a try,” she said. “It didn't take me long to get back into it, especially with Hannah's help all summer.”

Both girls were All-Southwest Christian Athletic Conference soccer players at First Baptist Christian. The soccer program there is coed.

“We had so few students in the school that it had to be that way,” Hannah said. “College is definitely more competitive.

“We've gone from a school where you just tried to scrape up enough players to have a team together to having to fight just to earn your time on the field.”

Lydia said there's a plus to having played coed soccer in high school.

“While it's definitely a big jump in terms of talent on the field, it's also different not playing against boys,” she said. “We had to be physical players at First Baptist because we were playing against boys.

“I do some of the physical moves I'm used to being contested with in high school ... the girls usually fall down. It's like no one's there.”

The Roth sisters will be there Wednesday.

“Like we said, it will be interesting,” Hannah said. “I'm looking forward to it and I know Lydia is, too.”
