Butler County is at slight risk for severe storms that could bring strong wind gusts along with the possibility of hail and isolated tornadoes later in the day Tuesday.

The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the area, as a low-pressure cold front moves into the area from the Great Lakes. Storms are expected to start about 2 p.m. and continue until about midnight as the system collides with the warmer air the area has been experiencing recently.

The NWS says the main threat for this storm system will be damaging winds, which could reach up to 58 mph. According Lee Hendricks, a Pittsburgh meteorologist with the NWS, this speed is fast enough to bring down trees and power lines.

“As far as the hail, atmospheric conditions are variable for hail, with low level moisture as well as having a lot of dryer air,” Hendricks said.

Hendricks said the conditions needed for an isolated tornado will be present, as a cold front passes through the area.

The storm is moving fast and NWS doesn't expect rain to be an issue, predicting between a 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch of rainfall.

“This (storm) is moving very quickly so storms won't be draining over the same area. The storm will hit and keep moving,” Hendricks said.

He suggests that residents be alert of their surroundings and keep up-to-date on what warnings are active in your area. “If they hear an alarm or sirens pay attention to what's going on and why they are being heard,” Hendricks said.
