Scoop's halfway home
We are at the midway point of the high school football season.
And the only thing we know for sure is that we really don’t know anything for sure.
Even sitting at 42-9 after an 8-2 week, I’m not 100 percent certain about any of our teams.
But I can hazard a guess.
Here’s my best hazarding.
On to the picks:
Norwin 38, Butler 11 — The Golden Tornado hung in there against a very good Seneca Valley team last week.
Norwin comes to town this week.
Butler is still dealing with a slew of injuries, which makes them ripe for another tough home loss.
North Allegheny 27, Seneca Valley 17 — In what could shape up to be the game of the week, the Raiders travel to Wexford where they haven’t had much luck over the years.
This is one of the Tigers’ stronger teams in recent years. The same could be said of Seneca Valley.
But NA at home is worth a few points and the Raiders won’t be able to pull off this road upset.
Knoch 35, Montour 6 — The Knights are a team that is hard to figure out the more they figure things out, if that makes any sense.
It isn’t difficult to figure out who wins this week. Knoch is rolling.
North Catholic 35, Mt. Pleasant 9 — What is up with the Trojans?
A seemingly unstoppable force two weeks ago, North Catholic is coming off two bad weeks, including a 27-0 loss to Derry.
The Trojans, though, rebound in a big way.
Freeport 38, Yough 14 — Austin Romanchak scored five touchdowns last week.
The Freeport senior quarterback will find the end zone a few more times this week.
Brookville 24, Moniteau 23 — Brookville is Quarterback High. It always seems to unearth potent passers.
Moniteau, though, has shown that its defense is a force and few teams have had success sustaining any long drives against the Warriors. And Moniteau’s secondary is underrated.
Still, I think Moniteau will come up short by the closest of margins.
Karns City 38, St. Marys 6 — It’s hard to believe the Gremlins are 1-4 midway through the season.
They won’t be 1-5.
Slippery Rock 42, Titusville 7 — The local Rockets are coming off back-to-back disappointing region losses.
This is a non-region matchup and just what the doctored ordered for Slippery Rock to get its early season mojo back.
Union/A-C Valley 35, Port Allegany 10 — One thing the Falcon Knights can do is score points.
That’s one thing Port Allegany struggles to do.
Mars 31, Shaler 17 — In a rare Saturday afternoon game for the Planets, they take on the Titans for Shaler’s homecoming.
Mars defeats the Titans.
Avonworth 42, Summit Academy 8 — The Knights finally put points on the board last week.
They’ll score again, but Avonworth is just too good.
Scoop was just flagged for roughing the passer.
