Walter Franklin Barber Jr.
Walter Franklin Barber Jr., 86, of Liberty Township, Grove City passed away on Tuesday at Grove City Medical Center.
He was born on May 3, 1932, in Apollo, Pa., Washington Township, Westmoreland County, and was the son of Walter Dight Franklin Barber and Wanda LaWave Beatty Barber.
Walter graduated from Grove City High School in 1950, and later, Grove City College in 1954.
He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1955 until 1957, and later the U.S. Army Reserves from 1957 until 1963.
He worked at Callery Chemical Co. from 1954 until 1955 and from 1957 until 1959.
He married Lois May Golla on Feb. 23, 1963.
Walter began his employment in 1959 at Quaker State Oil Refining Corp. in Oil City, working as a research chemist, until his retirement in 1994.
He enjoyed farming and hunting and was a life member of the NRA. He also enjoyed skeet shooting, singing in choirs, including the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, and the Bach Society. He played violin in regional orchestras and had served as both a trustee and elder in the Presbyterian Church USA.
He served as a justice of the peace in Liberty Township.
Survivors include his wife, Lois, at home; a son, Nathan Walter (Lisa) Barber; two daughters, Jennifer Lorraine (Douglas) Faull and Dr. Amy Rebecca Barber, all of Grove City; five grandchildren, Nathan Michael Barber, Krystina Marie (Tyler) DeLong, Dr. Catherine Lee Faull, Kaylee Elizabeth (Andrew) VanGent and Benjamin Douglas (fiancée Kristen) Faull.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, John Marlin.
BARBER — The family of Walter Franklin Barber Jr., who died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2018, will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. until noon Saturday at Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock.Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Robert G. McCreight, pastor of North Liberty Presbyterian Church presiding.Interment will take place at North Liberty Cemetery, Liberty Township, Mercer County.
