KARNS CITY — Classes at the Karns City School District will resume Tuesday after water lines are flushed and fixtures are replaced over the weekend in response to elevated levels of lead and copper found in the water.

Higher than acceptable levels of lead and copper were found Friday in all three district school buildings.

A letter to parents and guardians and results of the water tests were posted on the district website Friday by Superintendent Eric Ritzert.

“School will be in session on Tuesday. We have isolated the fixtures that tested high from use and will keep them out of service until remediated. We also plan for additional testing,” Ritzert said Friday.

The 10 posted test results from various rooms in each building showed lead levels exceeding the acceptable level of 0.015 milligrams per liter in five rooms in Chicora Elementary School.

At the junior-senior high school, copper levels greater than the acceptable level of 1.3 milligrams per liter were found in seven rooms and one room exceeded the acceptable lead level.

One sample taken at Sugar Creek Elementary School showed a high lead concentration.

Bottled water will be available for students and staff next week, according to the letter.

More testing will be performed and the results will be shared with parents and guardians, Ritzert said.
