Butler Mayor Ben Smith said a handful of people have expressed interest in the vacant police chief's job, but he hasn't decided when he will appoint someone to the position.

Smith said he hasn't asked anyone to apply for the job and isn't planning to advertise the position, but he has received resumes from fewer than six people.

“Soon, but not immediate,” Smith said about his timeline for appointing a chief.

The job became open after former chief Ron Brown retired on July 30, after rank-and-file officers' concerns about department leadership surfaced.

Capt. James Hollobaugh has been placed in charge of the department, which has 21 officers.

Current city police officers could be considered for the job.

Smith said he prefers to hire a local person for the job, but won't exclude someone from outside of the area.
