Authorities add assault charge in domestic dispute

Prosecutors have added an assault count to the case against a man who allegedly threatened to kill his mother during a domestic dispute in October.

President Judge Thomas Doerr granted the amendment Friday, adding a charge of misdemeanor simple assault in the case against Richard W. Jay, 38, of Butler.

Jay was previously charged with misdemeanor terroristic threats and summary harassment after an incident at his mother's home on Miller Avenue on Oct. 7.

Butler police said that Jay shoved the woman and “came at her with a closed fist but did not strike her,” according to court documents. He also allegedly told his mother he “was going to kill” her before fleeing the house.

Jay was later arrested walking on West Brady Street.

He remains free after being released on his own recognizance.

Jay stated that he intends to plead not guilty and take the case to trial.
