Butler police are seeking a burglar accused of stealing a handgun, $1,000 in currency, and 200 CO2 cartridges from an apartment on the 200 block of North Main Street.

Investigators suspect Clinton W. Scott, 46, no known address, pushed in a window air conditioning unit Saturday to get into the third-floor apartment.

Police on Monday obtained an arrest warrant for Scott, who is charged with felony counts of burglary, trespass and theft, and a misdemeanor count of theft.

The tenant discovered the break-in about 10 p.m. Saturday when she returned home, police said. Missing, she told officers, was a safe that was in a closet.

Inside the safe, according to court documents, was a Smith & Wesson .38 Special pistol, $2,000 and the CO2 cartridges valued at $2,000, as well as a cell phone and charger.

The stolen property was valued at $3,620.

During their investigation, documents said, police reviewed surveillance video from a nearby business that showed the suspected burglar walking to and from the fire escape leading to the woman's apartment.

The footage, police said, shows him holding something black under his left arm when he leaves.

Investigators obtained a still photo of the man, documents said, which they showed to the victim. She recognized Scott as the suspect.

It was not immediately known how she knew the defendant.

Scott was released from the Butler County Prison on June 12 after posting $25,000 bail in connection with a felony drug case.

The Butler County Drug Task Force in that case arrested the defendant last month on charges he sold heroin March 13 to a police informant.

That case is pending in Butler County Court.
