Building fire shuts down Route 19

Fire departments in and around Harmony are responding to reports of a fire in Route 19 in the borough. A section of the road is closed at the intersection of route 19and Little Creek Road. Motorists should expect delays.

JACKSON TWP — Emergency responders briefly shut down Route 19 in both directions in the area of Harmony Castings Thursday, as firefighters responded to a fire in the building’s ventilation system.

The fire was reported at about 12:15 p.m., according to online emergency dispatch records.

It originated with work being done on the interior of the building.

“One of the dust collectors caught on fire from the contractor cutting a ventilation duct,” said district Fire Chief Scott Garing.

Other than the damage to the dust collector, he said the building was largely left unscathed. No one was injured in the blaze.

Big Knob and Franklin Township fire departments, Harmony EMS, and Jackson and Lancaster police were all alerted.

Firefighters found significant smoke throughout the building, according to a social media post by the Harmony Fire District.

The company is located at 251 Perry Highway.
