Karen Kay Shaffer

Karen Kay Shaffer, 60, of Butler passed away Saturday at her residence.

She was born July 17, 1957, in Kremmling, Colo., and was the daughter of the late William A. and Betty Hassig Sonju.

Karen was a positive, happy person who enjoyed life to the fullest. She had a good word and sincere smile for anyone who had the pleasure of meeting her. She enjoyed traveling, camping, animals, auctions and collectible items.

Karen was employed by Sheetz in Slippery Rock, where she made everyone feel that every day is a good day. She made many cherished friends there.

Karen remained very positive in the long difficult struggle of living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

Karen is survived by her husband of 30 years, Robert Shaffer; and her two children, Alena Shaffer of Grove City, and Jared Shaffer of Butler; her two sisters, Delonna (Dean) Waters of Woodland Park, Colo., and Stephanie (Rick) Davis of Canyon City, Colo.; two brothers, Greg Sonju of Colorado Springs, Colo., and William Sonju of Canyon City, Colo.; her sisters-in-law, Linda Weiland, Connie (Dick) Uram and Elaine Spahn, and a brother-in-law, Neal (Donna) Shaffer, all of Butler.

SHAFFER — Arrangements for Karen Kay Shaffer, who died Saturday, May 12, 2018, were handled by Smith Funeral Home of Slippery Rock.A celebration of life memorial will be held later with private burial in Yampa, Colo.Memorial donations may be made to the ALS Association, 416 Lincoln Ave., Pittsburgh PA 15209, or Sheetz Family Charities Inc., Attn: Sarah Piper, 5700 6th Ave., Altoona, PA 16602.Arrangements by Smith Funeral Home of Slippery Rock.
