Police suspect Cranberry man of holding $100K of pot

YOUNGWOOD, Westmoreland County — A Cranberry Township man is being held on $200,000 bond in Westmoreland County for allegedly possessing 38 pounds of marijuana.

According to documents filed Tuesday by Greensburg police, Giovanni Omar Baassiri, 34, is charged with felony manufacturing, delivering or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver marijuana, as well as misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance and two traffic offenses following an incident that took place Tuesday afternoon.

According to the complaint, officers made a traffic stop at 1:05 p.m. on Route 119 north in Youngwood after seeing a vehicle not use a turn signal to change lanes and proceed to follow another vehicle too closely.

Officers allegedly smelled marijuana coming from inside the vehicle, being driven by Baassiri. He told officers there was nothing in the vehicle, and would not consent to a search, the complaint states.

A K9 unit was called to the scene, and alerted officers to something in the vehicle. There they found two large cardboard boxes containing about 38 one-pound vacuum sealed bags of what appeared to be marijuana, the complaint states. The marijuana could be worth more than $100,000, according to current street values.

Baassiri was unable to post $200,000 bond, and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing June 26 before District Judge Anthony Bompiani.
