A focus group of 12 students answered questions by raising their hand and direct response at Tuesday's 5th Annual School Safety Summit hosted at Slippery Rock University's Smith Student Center.

A group of students were asked if they would be surprised if an active shooter incident happened at their school.

Less than half of the students raised their hands.

The focus group, made up of high school, college and recent students, was part of the 5th Annual School Safety Summit on Wednesday at Slippery Rock University.

Butler County Area Vocational-Technical School Principal Regina Hiler and Executive Director Kurt Speicher moderated the group.

“It was very eye opening, and it really makes you think about what needs done,” Hiler said.

Herbert Hunt, the event's organizer, said every year the event gets more support and more diverse crowds interested in its discussions.

Hunt said schools can take the information or talking strategies home to work on their own plans.

Hunt said the safety meeting is a starting point, a beginning, not an end to finding the solution to school safety.
