Evans City mayor named finalist for Mayor of Year
EVANS CITY — Out of all the mayors in the state, borough Mayor Dean Zinkhann just might be the mayor of the year.
That’s according to the Association of Mayors of the Boroughs of Pennsylvania, which has named Zinkhann one of four finalists for the 2018 Mayor of the Year Award.
The association will name the winner at the association’s annual awards luncheon June 12 in Hershey.
“It’s just unbelievable really, I never expected this; I’m just in ecstasy I guess you could say,” Zinkhann said Tuesday.
Evans City Council member Shelley Natali nominated Zinkhann on behalf of the citizens of the borough.
“Mayor Zinkhann has served only one full term, but his passion is already evident,” the nomination read. “His support of our veterans is already recognized throughout the county and his efforts on behalf of the local Parks Authority shows his dedication to securing a much-needed recreational activity for the borough’s youth.”
Zinkhann said if his schedule allows for it he would like to attend the awards luncheon, but that his mayoral duties must come first.
“I’d love to be there,” he said. “I’m very excited.”
Zinkhann became mayor in 2013 when the previous mayor, Gary Foster, retired for health reasons. Zinkhann has served as mayor ever since and was reelected last fall.
Other finalists for the award include Mayor Guillermo Udarbe from Ridgway in Elk County, Mayor John Dindak from West Homestead in Allegheny County and Mayor Richard Starliper from Waynesboro in Franklin County.
Mayors are nominated by fellow elected officials in their municipalities for the work they do to support and improve their communities.
