Slippery Rock High freshman Anna Kadlubek set a school record in the 200-meter dash Friday at the Mars Invitational with a time of 25.95 seconds. She broke the mark previously held by Melissa Sopher, who is in the school's athletic hall of fame.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Anna Kadlubek saw the time and was certain it wasn't hers.

Then the Slippery Rock High freshman sprinter heard the cheers, saw the large smile stretching across her mother's face and had her track and field coach, Tom Meling, shake her hand.

Still, Kadlubek was in disbelief.

Kadlubek had just finished the 200-meter dash at the Mars Invitational Friday night in 25.95 seconds, breaking a school record previously held by Melissa Sopher — who is something of a track and field legend at the school and is in the Slippery Rock athletic hall of fame.

“I wasn't expecting any of this,” Kadlubek added. “I was excited and shocked.”

Kadlubek wasn't the only one shocked.

She almost stunned Avonworth/Northgate's Hayden Robinson in the event, nearly catching the standout sprinter in the final 10 meters.

“What was most impressive was she was running against a state-medalist and if that race would have been another five meters, Anna would have caught her,” Meling said.
