Dozens of prescription pills were seized following a Tuesday morning traffic stop, Butler police said.

The driver, Christopher Lee Smith Jr., 30, of Sugarcreek Township, Armstrong County, was arrested and charged with felony drug possession and other charges.

Patrolman Kory Fleming stopped Smith shortly after 9:30 a.m. at West Penn and Broad streets for having an expired registration, police said. The defendant also told the officer the car was not insured.

On top of that, according to court documents, the car had an expired inspection sticker on it.

It got worse for Smith when he stepped out of the vehicle and police noticed a small digital scale sticking out of his pants pocket.

Officers could also see an unlabeled pill bottle containing numerous blue pills that was between the driver's side door and seat, documents said.

A subsequent search of Smith turned up a plastic bag with five white pills.

The 46½ pills in the bottle were later identified as alprazolam, documents said, and the pills in the bag were found to be tramadol.

Xanax is the brand name for alprazolam and is commonly prescribed to treat anxiety. Ultram is the brand name for the synthetic opioid painkiller tramadol.

Police said Smith does not have prescriptions for the medications.

He was arraigned on two felony counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. He also was arraigned on two counts of possession of a controlled substance and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia, all misdemeanors.

Additionally, he faces summary charges of driving an unregistered vehicle and driving a vehicle without valid inspection.

He is free on $2,500 bail.
