BUTLER TWP — Butler School District officials are preparing to take on several capital projects this summer, including possibly moving its administrative offices.

The school board, at its meeting Monday night, reviewed a list of high-priority projects that will be done mostly with money the district borrowed through a $9.6 million bond issue earlier this year.

One project is that IKM architects are studying the logistics for a tentative plan to move the administrative offices to Butler Intermediate High School.

The district, for more than 40 years, has had its central offices and school board meetings in the Harriger Educational Services Center, located on Campus Lane on the same property as the senior high school.

The district is considering renovating the “teacher's center” in the intermediate high school into a reception area, conference room and offices, said Brian White, district superintendent.

In the past, most teachers in the building shared their classrooms and needed another area to work between classes, but with declining enrollment the need for extra offices now is almost gone, White said.

Some people would also take vacant offices in the building's guidance office, White said.

The board held its meeting Monday in the intermediate high school library, which would likely become its new meeting venue if it were to vacate the Harriger building, White said.

White said the district is looking at several possible uses for the Harriger building.

The list of capital projects also included replacing the flat roof at Center Township Elementary School; repairing the roof and water-damaged walls and ceilings at Northwest Elementary School; removing the “stage” that holds a snack bar in the senior high school cafeteria; refinishing the gym floor at the senior high school; and replacing the stadium turf at Art Bernardi Stadium.

Each project will be done through a cooperative state contract program or a contractor will be selected through a bid process, said Nick Morelli, acting director of business services.

District officials are meeting with the top three turf vendors later this week to discuss the district's needs, Morelli said. The Golden Tornado foundation will also contribute to the turf replacement.
